FSC-US Prospectus

How is FSC Funded?

In 1993, FSC was launched with the strong support of private charitable foundations, which were seeking solutions to the mounting global problems of illegal logging and deforestation, and to the environmental and social problems linked to them. FSC was created to be a market-based approach to promoting responsible forest management around the world, for the benefit of nature and people, communities and businesses.

Consistent with these origins, FSC-US has received the overwhelming majority of its support from private charitable foundations since it was founded as a national initiative in 1995. See below for a list of FSC-US's major contributors (over $20,000) for the past five years.

FSC-US is financially independent from FSC International, headquartered in Bonn, Germany. In 2007, 34% of FSC International's funds came from the support of charitable foundations, government donors and business contributions. The other 66% was generated largely from accreditation fees charged to certifying bodies. As of 2009, the average accreditation fee per certificate is approximately $800; the maximum fee is $3,500.
